For my second project for the medical art 2 module, I decided to make an instruction animation for a medical instrument.
I went to Tayside Medical History Museum to observe and measure the real medical instrument model. I decided to make a Blood pressure gauge.
The blood pressure gauge was made in Tokyo, Japan in 1976. A gauge unit, an arm cuff with connection wire and an air bulb are contained in the box. Assemble every part is needed each time when it needs to be used. Additionally, 9V battery is needed to use this gauge. (1976)
The aim of the animation is to explain how to assemble the gauge. I took a picture of the gauge. I made 3D models and animation clips on 3DBlender and edit on Adobe After Effect.
Design Process
1. Collecting Image References
Before starting to create the 3D model on 3D Blender, I took a picture of the blood pressure gauge with the ruler. There was the instruction booklet so I reference it to make the animation.
2. Drawing
I draw the components to understand the structure. Based on the drawing, I planned the process of modelling.
3. Storyboard
I draw the storyboard of the animation based on the instruction booklet which is enclosed.
3D Modeling on 3D Blender
I made the 3D model on 3D Blender based on my planning drawing.
The Gauge Unit
I started with cube geo and add more geo in the edit mode. Bevel was added on every edge of this object,
The Arm Cuff
I started with plan geo and made a loop for the metal loop. I used the Solidify modifier for thickness. I used the Bezier curve modifier for wrapping the arm cuff.
Based on my planning drawing, I made the 3D model on 3D Blender.
Decal
Decal is a surface that has printed on it an image that can be moved to another surface upon contact. For the decal process, I made images in Adobe Illustrator. Decal was worked on the seals and the beeper of the gauge unit, the velcro and the fabric logo of the arm cuff.
Modelling Details and Additional Object
Some parts of the objects such as air connector, Pin-jack, Air tubing connector tip, and Microphone pin-plug need to zoom in on the animation, therefore I add more detail and made those parts higher resolution. Microphone pin-plug cord was made with Screw modifier. After modelling two cords, curve modifier was applied. 9V battery was not included inside of the package, however, for better instruction explanation I made additional object of it.
Rendering Animation clips on 3D Blender and Additional work on Adobe After Effect
After modelling work has been done, I made animation clips on 3D Blender. On Adobe After Effect, I combine the animation clips and add text, background music and additional effects.
Create the thumbnail image on Adobe Photoshop
When I upload it on YouTube, the thumbnail would be helpful for helping the audience in recognizing and organizing animation, serving the same role for images as a normal text index does for words. I made the thumbnail image in Adobe Photoshop.
