MEDICAL ART MSC

University of Dundee,  2021 ~ 2022

Medical art encompasses a wide range of applications from patient communication and information to medical teaching and training. It is also used by the pharmaceutical industry to help explain their products and in the court room to help lay jury members understand complex topics. Medical artists produce work in a wide range of media including traditional illustrations, as well as interactive 3D models, and animations.

It's an extension of your central nervous system, which includes your brain and spine. The optic nerve transmits electrical impulses from your eyes to your brain. Your brain processes this sensory information so that you can see. Anatomy Head and Neck

Anatomy Head and Neck

This 3D model is from Medical Art 1 coursework. This coursework requires me to scan the object I choose. The wax model I made during the first semester was chosen. For the surface scanning task, Artec Eve scanner was used and edited on Artec Studio software. After all, work is done the 3D model was uploaded on SketchFab where can publish, share, discover, buy and sell 3D, VR, and AR content. Photogrammetry is a method of gathering reliable measurements and data about an object using photographic images. Modern photogrammetry software can quickly and automatically triangulate large image sets, resulting in the creation of complex point cloud datasets. These can be used to inform the reconstruction of a fully textured 3D surface model. Galaxy A51 was used to capture sets of overlapping photographs of the wax model. Agisoft Metashape software was used to complete the 3D reconstruction process, working through each of the key stages. The file was exported as OBJ and imported into Zbrush. In Zbrush, the objects are added with some polypaint.

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)

Polycystic Kidney Disease ( PKD) is an integrated disorder in which clusters of cysts develop primarily within kidneys, causing kidneys to enlarge and lose function over time. Symptoms of PKD are high blood pressure, back and side pain, headache, fullness in abdominal, blood in the urine, kidney stones, urinary tract infection, kidney failure.

Understanding Lazy Eye Poster

Understanding Lazy Eye Poster

The poster is from the final semester of Medical Art MSc course. A "lazy eye" is a childhood condition where the vision does not develop properly. It's known medically as amblyopia. It happens because one or both eyes are unable to build a strong link to the brain. It usually only affects one eye, and means that the child can see less clearly out of the affected eye and relies more on the "good" eye. It's estimated that 1 in 50 children develop a lazy eye.

This booklet is from the final semester of the Medical Art MSc program. Lazy eye also know as Amblyopia is caused when something disrupts the normal development of vision. It’s often assumed that younger children have the same vision as adults, but this is not the case. Children have to learn how to see – more specifically, their brains have to learn how to interpret the nerve signals sent from the eyes to the brain. It usually takes around 3 to 5 years before children can see as clearly as adults, and up to 7 years before the vision pathways in the brain become fully developed. If something affects one of the images the eye shows the brain as the brain develops, the signals become disrupted. The brain starts to ignore the poor-quality images, the brain becomes increasingly reliant on the stronger eye, which makes the weaker eye even lazier. Resulting in a “Lazy eye” The booklet and accompanying animation and 3D model are created to help educate parents on the causes and treatment of amblyopia.

Scapula Drawing

Scapula Drawing

The work is from the Body system session of Medical Art MSc. I referenced the real scapula to create the artwork. I started by study sketches of the bone in different directions in order to understand the 3D structure of the scapula. After the study sketch, I used Adobe Fresco for drawing and recorded the whole process of the drawing. After drawing I index the name of the anatomical name on the drawing by Adobe Photoshop.

Hand dissection

Hand dissection

The work is from the Body system session of Medical Art MSc. I referenced the real dissected hand specimen to create the artwork. I started by studying sketches of the hands in different directions in order to understand the structure of the hand. After the study sketch, I used Adobe Fresco for drawing and recorded the whole process of the drawing. After drawing I index the name of t anatomical name on the drawing by Adobe Photoshop.

AnatomiCARD

AnatomiCARD

Based on my personal experience of home-study materials, the form of a flashcard was created. From the right side of the image, a general introduction of each system of the human body is shown, and next to that page, the named illustration shows basic and clear information about the circulatory system. Users can test when they leaf through the pages of a flashcard.

Femur

Femur

This drawing is from the Body system session of Medical Art MSc. I referenced real femur bone for this drawing. I started with study sketches of the bone in different directions in order to understand the structure of the femur. I used pencil on paper to draw and used Photoshop for attachin index of the femur.

Medical instrument infromation webpage design

Medical instrument infromation webpage design

The surgical instrument I choose was Laminectomy Punch. It was taken a photo from Dissection Room and rendered in full colour in Adobe Illustrator. For the final webpage design, I choose to use the search icon for the search bar. Different colours depending on the category was not needed due to the characteristic of the web page.

INDEPENDENT STUDY

Musashino Art University (Tokyo, Japan)

Before I started the Medical Art MSc, I studied anatomy and anatomy study independently.
I took the Zoology lecture at the Musashino Art University in 2018 and 2019. I had a chance to observe real animal bone specimens and draw them.
