Ophthalmology Projects: A Picture Book for Children Patients with Amblyopia

Updated: May 26, 2022

For my first project for the medical art 2 module, I decided to make a picture book for kid patients with amblyopia.

Amblyopia as known as lazy eye, is a childhood condition where the vision does not develop properly. Using an eye patch to cover the stronger eye is one treatment for recovering amblyopia. A patch covers the healthy eye so the lazy eye is forced to work. Using a patch to heal a lazy eye can often be an unpleasant experience for the child until they get used to it. This is why children need to be explained the reason for using a patch, and the importance of sticking with the treatment, so that child patients are motivated to do it.

Beginning of the project I was planning to create comics but considering the age of the patients, I changed the contents into a picture book.

I have a chance to attend the kids’ clinic at Ninewells Hospital. I was able to observe patients and their guardians and gain ideas from doctors.

Comic Book

At the beginning of the project, I decided to create a comic for children’s patients with amblyopia. The main character of this comic name “Iris” introduces the anatomy of the eyes and leads readers to understand the ‘lazy eye’.

However, considering the age of the patients (most patients are under 6 years old) less text and more images would be better to make them understand. Therefore, I changed the plan to make a comic book into a picture book.

Storyboard

For a better understanding of the Lazy eye, I decided to start the story with more familiar subjects, such as cars on a road and fish in a river. After that, the picture book explains how the eyepatch can improve their sigh.

I draw most of the illustrations on Adobe Fresco and edited them in Adobe Photoshop. After that, I made mock-up images in Photoshop and combine all pages into a PDF file,
