Femur Drawing

Updated: May 24, 2022

This blog shows the progress and the final artworks of the Femur drawing from the Anatomy- Body system session.

Hepatic drawing of Femur. Charcoal on paper, A1, 2021

At the beginning of the work. I draw a haptic drawing of the femur. Haptic drawing is a drawing that depends on the sense of touch, not visual. I closed my eyes and put my left hand on the femur. The other hand was holding charcoal. I sometimes press the paper harder when I can feel bumps, and smudged the charcoal when I feel a smooth shaft.

Haptic drawing lets me focus on the 3-dimensional structure of the femur and interestingly it was easier to understand its structure than just watching. Also, this work does not have to be "perfect" and there is no "right way to draw, but express the feeling on the fingertip, so I felt much relief to start to draw.

After the haptic drawing, I buckled down to study the anatomy of the femur. I draw each part of the femur and tried to convey the 3-dimensional sense I got from haptic drawing to the study sketches.

Femur drawing- before feedback, Pencil on paper, A3, 2021

I used a measuring instrument in order to draw 1:1 size the drawing. mostly HB~4B pencils were used and white drawing paper was used. The femur that I referenced, has some injuries so I depicted that part too. However, I did not have to recreate that part. Therefore, after I got feedback from the professor, I need to modify it.

This is the final drawing of the Femur. I add more detail to the shaft and recover the damaged part.

Femur drawing with index, Adobe Photoshop, 2021

I add the anatomical index and background. I used an overlay to make the drawing and the background blend together.
